I’ve noticed people wanting to start discussions on various topics related to The Arinthian Line, Fury of a Rising Dragon, etc in the comments section of the blog posts, which in turn get buried over time. This discussion page should help (scroll to the very bottom to post your own thought/question, or reply to someone else along the way). I’ll weigh in//respond in between bouts of writing/editing when I can.
Let me kick things off by quoting a reader, who said, “What I find inspiring is that I think we can all find a little of ourselves in each of the characters.”
All right, so which of the characters do you relate to, and why?
If that question doesn’t inspire you, perhaps one of these will:
What’s your favorite scene?
Who is your favorite villain?
What’s your favorite spell? Why?
Which light-hearted scene did you enjoy the most? Why?
Which scene was the most thrilling for you?
Otherwise, have any questions, ideas, thoughts? Leave a comment below, and we’ll see how it goes!

I would love you to make a game of it if a movie or game or anything ever happens please tell
P.S. my name is is kaden
P.P.S I LOVE YOUR BOKKS
P.P.P.S My favorite spell is centaro hope i spelled it right cause you coulde hand 3 3rd degree or lower warlocks without arcanery!
Perhaps a movie franchise will materialize in the next decade or so, who knows, Kaden (it’s a long and laborious process that requires a metric ton of funding and belief). Glad you like Centarro. Hint regarding that spell: Ordinaries like you and I have the ability to access that spell via the power of concentration ;)
i want to know if they can make a imediat way to get rid of the predator so more people can turn into dragons.
Perhaps in due course!
SPOILER!SPOILER!SPOILER!SPOILER!SPOILER!SPOILER

I cant put this book down especialy at the battle of the tallows! PLove you sever bronny!(: (: (: (:
Thank you :D
I absolute loved Champions Wrath and can’t wait for the next series you cook up.
Thank you, Carter. Did you have any favorite scenes? Any favorite characters?
And I hope you’ll consider leaving an honest review on Amazon :)
So when is Champions Wrath coming to Audible?
Unsure at this time. I have to contact the publisher (Tantor) as I only signed a contract for three books, and the series ended up going to four.
Well I’d narrate but I don’t have a voice for it haha. I have a long commute to and from work(3 hours round trip) and that’s how I flew through your first books so quickly! I just don’t have the time to sit and read, so audiobooks is how I have to do my reading haha!! I can definitely parrot others by saying your books would make amazing screen play, if not the big screen maybe a tv series so it can capture ALL of the intricate details! Best of luck and it is a truly great series!
Update: They jumped on it and are sending the contract tomorrow morn in order to get started ASAP.
Great! On my second round of both series! Hoping they finish up quick :)!
Contract signed; am awaiting release date of audiobook, which I will announce when I get it.
Enjoy, Nick!
Great! Happy New Year! Hope it’s a happy and healthy one!
Any updates?
Awaiting a release date, Nick. Then i will post on all social media with the announcement :)
I think my favorite scene, and one that could be amazing in a movie would be the battle at Hangmans Rock.
Yeah a lot of people really enjoyed that one, which was mighty fun for me to write!
Can you make this to a movie or video game i would really like to see when augum got the settling! or be able to cast spells it would be SOOOOOOOOOO COOL!!
It was written to become a movie franchise in due course, so maybe! :)
NO SPOILERS I READ TH COMMENTS I SAW 2 SPOILES WHILE LOOKING AT 2 COMMETS STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is finally here
Yes it is :D
This is a question i feel like people should have asked by now: Are there healing dragons? If not how do
healing element worlocks get the dragon simul?
There are and they can get the simul the same way! But it’s not an easy ordeal by any means. Maybe one day I’ll showcase a healer doing it :P
YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just got it on kindle! YAY!
Enjoy! :D
Just finished the new book and I am feeling so many emotions. One thing I’m sure many people will ask you about is the major event told to Augum by Ning at the end(trying not give away too much here) . Please tell me you already have something in mind to fix it. Besides that I loved every second of it. I spent every spare moment I had reading this book and in so pleased with how it turned out (besides the one part I mentioned to be honest I’m veeeeery upset about that). Thanks for all the work you do Mr. Bronny! Cant wait to read whatever comes next
I finished as well, the ending was quite sad. I hope Bridget’s family can inherit it or perhaps adopting and accepting them in the old way would work similar to how Katrina became the daughter of the king. Well written although I would like to know more about Leland due to his apprenticeship with Ning, and overall ponential.
Thank you to you both for being part of the ART ;)
I have a couple questions here:
When someone hits their ceiling but they continue to practice their spells could they get those spells to be stronger that their actual degree? (for example if Augum hit his ceiling now but continued training telekinesis will he eventually get it to 20th degree level?)
Do you have any plans for the trio to learn Soundtrap? Mrs.Stone mentioned teaching it to them in legend but she planned it for the day after they got drunk so she did not teach it to them.
After the trio leave Ley in Champion’s Wrath will they return to Ley without becoming a Leyan?
Final question, do you have plans of Augum becoming King of Solia after Fury of a Rising Dragon series or after the next series? Or will Augum still refuse but be offered the throne again?
Spellcasting is a muscle that always needs maintenance simply to retain the knowledge.Hitting one’s ceiling typically means one has hit the limit of one’s understanding / comprehension, as well as one’s ability to continue going to the gym of the mind, for a certain spell required for the next degree. SO yes, one could theoretically continue to get better with one spell, but that very discipline is all that is needed to break through on other spells–that is, unless one cannot grasp the complex concept, at which point one would be out of luck.
Sound Trap is a very difficult spell, but if they come across a competent mentor there is no reason for the trio to learn the spell properly.
>After the trio leave Ley in Champion’s Wrath will they return to Ley without becoming a Leyan? Final question, do you have plans of Augum becoming King of Solia after Fury of a Rising Dragon series or after the next series? Or will Augum still refuse but be offered the throne again?
Too early to say on all counts :)
Well any world building advice
Hmm. I build mine as I go, filling in details as I need them. But I also have a lot of foundational grounding in building worlds because I used to be a Game / Dungeon Master for tabletop role-playing games like Rifts and D&D. Those books are rich with resources for building worlds. I also used the library a lot, and read and research medieval history in my spare time, taking extensive notes in binders that have grown thick over the years.
Above all, have fun with your world. The big question then becomes, what would YOU like to see in it? Good luck!
Hello!
i was wondering if you could fill in the missing spells in the spell page?
also, do you know what you will write after book4? i hope you write about the future, like when they hit thier ceiling, of when they get married, etc.
thanks, Josh
Hello, Josh! Yes, the spell list is on the to-do list, and I and my team will be working on it in due course, most likely after the launch.
As to what I’ll be writing next, I will eventually make an announcement on that very subject. Thanks for your patience :)
I haven’t seen anyone else do this kind of question on here, so I’ll take a crack at it:
What scene from ANY of the books would you MOST want to see in movie form?
SPOILERS MAY FOLLOW!!!
Mine would be the scene where Augum first discovers he has The Settling. The dark forest, the fear in his enemies eyes, and the lightning casting a blue glow over everything… chills, guys. Literal chills.
Comment below on your answer!
I have two favorite scenes. The first would be Augum’s fight in the arena with Robin and Augum’s fight as a dragon for the first time.
I really like that one also. I’d have to say that my favorite part was in Legend when Augum inherits the scion from Mrs. Stone at the Black Castle and he goes up against some necromancers and totally demolishes them and then disowns Lord Sparkstone. It gets my heart rate up every time.
I don’t really have a favorite scene, honestly. Basically any scene that has Augum absolutely annihilating everything in a warpath, favorites include, but are not limited to, when he gets the scion (previously mentioned) and destroys a bunch of necromancers, when he is fighting through the Academy against the soldiers, any scene when he uses his telekinesis to devastating effect, and when the settling happened (also previously mentioned) and he obliterated the Canterrians.
My favorite scene would have to be (ATTENTION SPOILERS FOR THIS IS INFORMATION FROM THE O5 COUNCIL) the scene in the gladiator arena with Robin (I think that’s his name can’t remember well) getting shanked by all the ghosts and also with his aunt lighting herself on fire while in slow motion due to centarro.
What a wonderful question, and it’s awesome to see so many responses! As for myself, I’d want to see the arena battle between Augum and Robin in a movie, but i’d also like to see all of my work on film =P
And I find it interesting that I routinely hear about that moment of The Settling happening. Seems people love the “badassness” of it ;)
Hello Mr. Bronny! When can the advance reader team expect to get access to the book? I’ve been dying to get my hands on it and I know release is only a few weeks away so should we expecting within the next week?
Hiyas again Alejandro! I don’t know the exact day, but most likely in the next two weeks :) Thanks for your patience!
Does this mean the book’s getting released in the next month or so? If so, will it be released on ebook? I usually read on my Kindle :)
Yes on both counts! We’re weeks away now ;)
I also wanted to say maybe put newest comments at the top and have new posts at the top too?
That’s actually a good idea. I’ll see what I can do :)
I was wondering is there a ranking system to unnameables and how would you measure their power. Also it would be nice to see a world wayyyy a.father the trio and maybe they become unnamable legends? With some new hero’s and as I mentioned in my contact the fall of a golden age. I just thought that would be interesting. But Mrs. Stones childhood is veryyy interesting.
There’s a lot of future potential with the world and Unnameables and the trio, so I don’t shut the door on anything with regards to that stuff :)
Does anyone else want the Trio accept invitations to Ley, and eventually become Unnameables of Friendship or something like that?
No? Just me? Ok…
A situation where the trio have turned into Leyans and Mrs stone is mentoring them would be cool
That’s an interesting idea ;)
Hi Sever, just wanted to say that the trios adventures really helped me out emotionally when i had to move countries and honestly all authors feel lackluster when compared to you!
On another note i think it would be awesome if the trios next adventure would take place in a world where the continent of sithesia is thriving in trade and the trio are celebrated as being the hero of not just Solia but the entire continent.
Also i think that an overwhelming, unknown outside force would be a really cool addition to the next books story, as Mrs Stone has mentioned life beyond Sithesia.
I’m glad the trio gave you a boost, Dan! Its tough moving, especially countries. I’ve done it a few times in my youth with my parents, and it was always a shock (though also exciting).
Oh, and rest assured, I’ve got BIG plans for our beloved trio, just you wait ;)
Did you have any favorite characters? Any favorite scenes? Always curious.
Wow we have more in common than i thought!
My favourite character (other than the trio) would have to be Haylee but Tyneon (the guy who died saving his grandad in book 1) has a special place in my heart.
Could we have a date on a possible Champion’s Wrath pre-order?
Sincerely,
Ben
Sorry, Ben, but Champion’s Wrath will be published suddenly with little warning, most likely early December ish. But if I come up with a concrete date I’ll let everyone know asap ;)
Good to know! Thanks!
Hi Sever! The AL and FoARD series are my favorite books and nothing even comes close! (except for Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland). I read all of 1.5 million words in about two months. I hated when the Von Edgeworths stole the castle and I hated Robin so I was really happy when he got defeated by everyone he had killed. I think Laudine is a really neat character and was sad when she got left behind in the dome. I know you probably get this alot but I want to see a detailed list of spells including all of the incantations, thoughts, motions, etc. I would also like to explore the world in which they reside ‘cuz the farthest they get out of Sithesia is Crimson Tooth and that’s still in it. I also would like a list of creatures like the bears of Ohm and the things in Endraga Ra. I also wanted to know how long you think it will be before you finish every possible thing about your world including if you sell rights to a movie or game. ;}
P.S. my name is Kagen.
Hello Kagen!
I’m honored that you love my work so much! Laudine is a joy to write, and she will have a part to play in Champion’s Wrath. She is one of those characters (there are so many!) that I wish I had more time for.
I’m working with a young lady (who is also a reader) to slowly get the site upgraded, so stay tuned on your requests; perhaps I can fill out a few in due course.
As to how long it will be finishing my world, hmm, that’s difficult if not impossible to answer. I know I will continue to write in it for a long time to come though! I have LOADS of ideas :)
Thank you for your support, Kagen :)
I’ve re-read both series twice and just love the world you created! Can’t wait for the final book of the series. Id love to see what happens to the trio in the future and if any of them reach mastery in their element
Thank you so much,, Lucas, I am grateful for your support and glad you’re enjoying my work. Did you have any favorite scenes? Any favorite characters? I’m always curious :)
SPOILER ALERT!
I’ve got to say my favorite scene was when Augum tunes to the dragon and when he’s able to actually turn into a dragon. It just feels like its such a huge moment for the trio!
Only half way through Burden’s Edge so far favorite scene:
Robin getting punched in nose I hate bullies
Character favorite: Leera because I admire ladies that tell you how it is no beat around bushes
Light heart scene favorite: when Aug’s Great grandfather passes. I just recently lost my grandpa
Favorite villain: Whisper Blades cause I like Ninjas
Favorite spell: reveal to see tendrils of magic I like puzzles so would be cool to see on screen
Favorite thrilling scene: warlock tournament. I’m very competitive
Final note:
This is Arthur I hope Steve loves your books and we get to see this on screen someday!
Just replied to your email as well, Art, thanks! And you have my condolences regarding your grandpa. Cherish his memory well.
I am trying to build a village in Minecraft, and I wanted to base it off of Solia. (I named my sword Burden’s Edge, my horse Tobias, and my breastplate Augum’s Defender.) I have to ask, what it the architecture like in Solia? How are the basic buildings in Blackhaven made of? What about rural villages? What are some sighs of wealthy living? If you could answer these questions, it would help me out a lot.
Thanks,
-Ben
P.S. I was wondering if you could give me some info on the Unnameables. I want to design shrines/temples and put them on my land. If you can’t tell me their names, (they are Unnameables, of course) then can you tell me what they preside over? Ex. Unnameable of _______
Thanks again,
-Ben
I am no Sever Bronny by I believe Kratos is one of the Unnameables, in my mind and he would preside iver wisdom, and I believe the God of War was mentioned by one of the Dreadnoughts
Solian architecture is basically medieval architecture, so googling any sorts of buildings for medieval times should suffice nicely :)
As for the Unnameables, they each represent certain parts of faith. For example, Krakatos (he goes by many names through history) represents wisdom and intelligence. There is a god of famine, one for crops, wine, etc. But complicating things is the fact that each kingdom has its own Unnameables, and those gods have changed through history (and as William pointed out, the Rivicans had their own pantheon, as did every species throughout history, creating a vast and rich dynamic). I have not delved too deeply into the subject though because I’m saving it for a possible future book :)
orion is the god of war
Sounds like I’m good with just making up my own! (except for Orion and Krakatos of course.)
I think it would be cool for the gods to have long forgotten elements or all of the elements
That’s an interesting prospect . . .
Quick question, I was wondering what was prince gavinius’ element before necromancy, and what was that one unnameables element, because both were never mentioned
You know, that’s a great question, one I hadn’t even pondered. Because of how large my world is, I oft come up with only the necessary details I need for that moment in time, as otherwise it’s easy to get bogged down in writing backstory instead of doing the writing.
So what element do you see him having been?
I would like to think that gavinius would have either been fire or lightning, and the unnameable would have been either air or lightning. I think that somebody’s element effects their temperament, like most librarians at the library of antioc are air, most evil warlocks are necromancy, ect, so these seem to be a fit. just a thought
Wasn’t Prince Gavinius’s element Ice prior to Necromancy? I might be mistaken, but I swear I remember reading that when he visited Senior Arcaneologist Lien Ning.
I personally would like you to add to the spell list
I get this one a lot. rest assured it will happen in due course :)
ok, I just really want the completed list along with necromatic spells. but I wont rush you.
oh and healing.
FYI, I’m all in favor of following the trio in upcoming series. You could add some AAS flashback in the same storyline…. I think that organically putting the flashbacks into the same story will keep familiarity but also introduce her youth.
Thanks for the input, Ken!
• I was also thinking, Augum becoming the king of Solia would actually harm Solia and the Arcaners.
○ With the Arcaners it would paint them as a Solian order of knights rather than a neutral organization of knights.
○ As for Solia, Augum is way too powerful and too revered as a hero to be king without either accidentally abusing his power without even realizing it, other working on his behalf abusing his power, or people simply letting him get away with things that he would rather they not let him.
§ As well, his level of power would probably cause some very serious political issues with the other kingdoms and place Solia in danger after what could be called the honeymoon period of saving all of the kingdoms.
• Frankly, I think that it would be more interesting, and make more sense after everything that Solia has been through with either psychotic kings and weak ones that sell them out, if Solia tried to set up some sort of parliament in place of a king.
○ So far, pretty much every corrupt politician that the trio have encountered has been someone born into entitlement or someone working for someone corrupt and entitled.
§ So, it would be interesting for them to encounter and deal with someone who rose to power from nothing and is using their political power to forward some personal agenda or simply to profit themselves.
§ It would also be interesting to see in this new government how Arcaners will be included and how involved they would be allowed to be.
Such you for such an in-depth analysis! However I suspect Champion’s Wrath will change your outlook (you’ll see what I mean when you read it) :)
Whats to stop the politicians going corrupt? The archers might stop some of it but power corrupts everyone
I wasn’t thinking of this as a corruption proof government or anything like that. I was thinking of this as something new that the trio have never dealt with. They would still be dealing with corruption, but it will be in a different format than what they normally used to and come out them in different ways than what they have dealt with before.
in response to your question on Mr. Bronny’s latest post, I think that Mr. Bronny should make another series on the trio. I came to this decision because most writers I have seen eventually change their main characters or just stop publishing, and it really would be refreshing to not have both of those happen. I have read both the arinthian line and fury of a rising dragon series at least twice and am a very avid reader, and I must say that frankly I have never and probably will never find another author like Mr. Bronny. Remember this is just a suggestion and I hope he sees it.
Thank you so much for your feedback, Logan, I appreciate it, and am grateful for your amazing support :)
You have no idea how much that means to me, this just made my year.
Hello sever I have a question
What happened to Augum power to cast healing spells?
Did it stop or can he still cast them? If he can can you make him use that ability please?
Sorry I am Steve
Hello Steve! He never pursued that avenue, and thus it withered. It was a lesson in arcanery, how things can die off if not researched and expounded upon. Mrs. Stone talked a little about that concept :)
Hi sever bronny you are a great author and wrote my favorite book series couldn’t stop reading it!
Hello! Glad you’re enjoying my work. Do you have any favorite characters? Any favorite scenes? I’m always curious :)
Hello Sever. I really love your books and I have read all of them at least 3 times! But, after re-reading them, I have a few questions.
1. Can you put the names of all the neat extensions and otb spells that augum learned?
2. After finishing FOARD #4, what will you write about? I would like to see what happened in the future like when they hit their ceiling etc.
i meant *Can you put the names and uses of all the neat extensions and otb spells that augum learned?
Also, can you make a sene where a healer has to use his/her armor, first offensive ,shield, and weapon. Because I would like to see that.
Sorry for all the questions, I just really like the series
No trouble at all. Yes that is the longterm plan for the website, to have an entire list of spells, including the extensions and off-the-book spells. I’ll be bringing somebody on to help me with this task as my time and energy is mostly on the writing and editing. But yeah, there’s an appetite for it I wish to satiate. As to the healer scene, I’ll see what I can do, but you’ll have to wait a while ;)
Glad you’re enjoying my work :)
Oh and as to your second question: At this point I have two options before me that interest me: writing the trio when they’re older; and writing about Mrs. Stone’s tempestuous youth, and her journey in becoming “The Arcane Artist.”
Ok thanks a lot
Oh do you know when you will be able to complete it? I will be looking forward to seeing that
It’s far too early to commit to deadlines, but you can probably expect the first book of whichever story choose to write for around December 2021 :)
I’ve been wondering for a while, did the Arcaners have any enchantments or anything specific to them?
I’ve always loved and been fascinated with the idea of enchantments in fantasy. With the Arcaners having spell specific to them it makes me wonder if they had any enchantments or crafting methods that were specific to them too.
I’m going to explore more of the Arcaner pathos in future books, and some of that of course will deal with arcanery specific only to them. I’ve purposely left their future arcanery unfinished (not much is filled in yet) because I want to explore that along with the trio when I’m writing those books. I’ve made a note for my future files asking what an Arcaner-specific enchantment would look like.
Great question, Corvus!
I was wondering if you were planning on making a spell book or something similar? I believe the Harry Potter series had a similar thing but dedicated to Quidditch.
I think that’s a really lovely idea, Will. Perhaps an almanac with the spells, effects, maps, etc? Though not sure when I’ll have the time, I’ll make a note of it and see what I can do :)
SPOILERS AHEAD SPOILERS AHEAD………………But if I think im correct, then the dome closed around the school and part of the area around it, and the siege-engine dragon is trapped outside it, and Augum threatened Darby if Katrina causes havoc.
Yeppers. That sounds right
Yes, that’s correct :)
Hello! Im wondering if you could explain more about the dome around the school at the end of Honors Price. Some questions I have are how big is the dome? Does it only go around the school? Are they trapped in it? Is the heart of the colossus dragon in it? I reread a few parts but was still a little unsure. Thanks!
Hiyas Eli!
Sure, no problem. The dome covers the entire academy and the grounds, including underground (it’s actually a giant sphere that penetrates the ground). yes, they are trapped in it. I’ll refrain from answering the Heart of the Colossus portion so as not to spoil it for others (hint: the Heart of the Colossus is needed to run the siege engine as its literal heart).
Hope that helped!
Hi,
I was wondering if you were thinking of publishing your books with a main brand publisher instead of through Amazon.
Thanks.
I haven’t really thought about it. If someone approached me I’d consider it of course, as long as it’s a viable plan.
I feel that there is something Sever Bronny doesn’t get enough credit for: writing female characters, most notably Bridget and Leera.
In fiction, I feel that too many writers will put their female characters up on a pedestal, declare them flawless, for fear of being labeled misogynistic. Those characters are one-dimensional and boring, and make for extremely underwhelming stories. *COUGH* Looking at you, Rey Skywalker. *COUGH*
Of course, some other authors do the opposite. They only use female characters for the “Damsel in Distress” trope, and it definitely gets old after a while.
You, Sever Bronny, have not made those mistakes. Instead, we have two incredible female characters. They are incredible fighters, but they also appreciate some of the finer things in life. They are flawed in some ways, which endears them to us and creates multi-faceted and dynamic relationships that help drive the story forward.
Anyway, to recap, Sever Bronny has done an incredible job with his female characters, specifically Bridget and Leera, and I don’t think he gets enough credit for it.
Sincerely, Ben
I am honored, Ben, thank you. Means a lot.
Like Haylee..cough…cough. But really I want to see Haylee do something. I was really. reaaaaaly disappointed she didn’t get to do the thing on that place because she is always the one getting hurt sick or what have you. Even when Bridget was the one to always get sick, stabbed, cursed multiple times, slashed at, or overdrawn, she used to do something important, but Haylee is just “The Sick Girl” now and her most noteworthy accomplishment is just her passing the two things which are still HUGE and not just anyone can do it in that world but just saying(trying not to do spoilers). She’s probably my best female character. She has so much potential for change and to become an MC, but I guess it didn’t really work out. And she is probably the one character who grew as a person the most gong from condescending snotty rich girl to what you have now. But yes keep up the good work, and I hope I can read about Augum beating that evil airhead on that flying metal chicken soon.
That’s a sentiment I share with you, Angel. Alas, sometimes there just isn’t the room to squeeze more characters into the story. But in general I do agree that I would love to involve Haylee more. She has gone through a lot, changed a lot, has her quirks and flaws (oh boy does she like pretty rich thing!), and indeed has loads of potential. I’d love to write her in a school setting a bit more too, but not sure if there’s time (each book takes a year of my life, so I have to be very choosey).
And thanks for not putting in spoilers for readers who haven’t gotten as far as you :)
MOOOOOOOVIEEEEEESSSS
Yeah forgot to put my name. It’s Devon.
That’s the long term plan :)
Hi Sever,
Absolutely love the world you’ve built and the young, brave souls you have introduced all of us to. The best visual moment for me was Augum using his training cube as a weapon and the Archons being mystified about the destructive result. Augum’s “in battle” ability to strategize is masterful. I am curious about one other thing. Augum specifically asked if necromancy was part of the original elements as defined in The Founding. We have also now witnessed an Archon that turned away from his code to help the trio. Previously all warlocks the trio encountered with black rings were only necromancers and sworn to the Lord of the Legion. Is it possible that someone that has black rings and is a necro-element user can be “good” or benevolent? I’d love to see a necromancer be part of the Arcaner order. It would be strange. I imagine that person would face huge adversity, but wow would it make for an interesting read.
Also, what would the Elemental “offensive” spells look like for a healer? What would the effect look like, and what would the spell do? What does Jengo’s shield look like? What about his summon weapon? (If he has one).
Thank You,
James C.
Hiyas James!
Thank you for such a lovely letter. Interestingly, I get a lot of requests for a necromancer character, and it is indeed something that I think would be wicked fun to play around with — that is, having a good necromancer character, or even necromancy being allowed as a “legal again” element. But then of course seeing it all turn sour would be fun too.
The idea is filed in a very large folder of possibilities, so we’ll see. As you can tell, I’ve crafted the world to be voluminous and flexible so that I can go in any direction I want.
A healer’s First Offensive (and shield) is yet to be revealed in the world, so I don’t want to spoil it here, but I can say it would likely be underpowered as healers are expected to stay focused on healing (non offensive) spells. In fact healers as a whole look down on standard spellcraft and consider it a bit of a waste of time. This is a secret point of honor among them, a bit of a culture thing within the paradigm of the healing element (I could write a whole book from a healer’s perspective one day).
Hope that helps clear things up a bit, James, and thanks for reading my work :)
Hey Sever! Love all of the series and am very happy that book 4 of FoaRD is coming along nicely :) A few things I would like to know about is both Ms. Stone’s earlier life, just in general more about the Unnameable pantheon and the history of Ley and how it was founded (since I’m sure the two are related, at least in my head), more about arcanery and other spells of higher degrees/things that come with mastery and also maybe more about the the fall of the Arcaners. A couple questions- 1. Does Hell exist/where do witches come from? | 2. Will the various dedication levels of Augum, Bridget, and Leera to the Academy work impact their likelihood of acheiving mastery eventually? Also, I think I identify most with Bridget because we’re both nerds but we love goofing around once in a while. I also love her story and hope she gets more credit for her hard work. I absolutely love the series- keeps me captivated all the time. Can’t wait for book 4!!!!!
P.S. Sorry for all the questions, I’m a curious nerd :P
Mrs. Stone’s history is reserved for an entire series, so I hope you’ll forgive me for not commenting on that at this time. But the pantheon of the Unnameables is eons old, far, far older than Mrs. Stone, who aged out of Sithesia at around 101 years of age (or so). But the Unnameables go back thousands of years (perhaps longer!).
1. Yes, “Hell” exists much like Ley, and is a place that likely will only come into play via other necromancers.
2. Hard to say, so I’ll just answer with I don’t know =P
No trouble at all, I’m only sorry I wasn’t able to answer them all!
With the 9th degree frenzy and srink hopefully bieng introduced to solia again through the trio does that mean we will see more of the separate kingdoms and maybe more about there arcane schools ? Bc we know quit a bit about Cantera and there arcane school but the rest we really only know through foreign exchange. And second hand stories
Yes, that’s the hope! We’ll just have to see how the plotting works out, though :)
Thanks
My friend and I were hanging out at the pool and spent OVER AN HOUR discussing how we would like to see an Arinthian Line video game that follows the original series and maybe a sequel that follows the FoARD series. We envisioned it being an open-world adventure, and once you completed the main campaign, you could explore more and get all the way up to the 20th Degree, and maybe even Mastery.
That sounds like a lot of fun. I’d play that game =P
I was thinking that it would be cool for the game to be an original story taking place at the height of the Arcaner’s power and influence during some war or another hundreds of years before the books. The player character being a new recruit who is placed at the center of events by circumstance and ends up climbing up the ladder and whatnot to the rank of Dragon.
That sounds fun, but playing out the Trio’s story through a video game sounds better, at least to me.
I’d probably be up for whatever the game designers had in mind. After all, I wouldn’t be the one putting in the work. I believe in letting artists express themselves. That said, I wouldn’t sell the rights to a video game unless it’s to a studio that could handle the scope of the project.
I really hope you do the same if you ever make a movie of the books. Too many amazing books have had their legacies tarnished by absolutely terrible movies. *COUGH COUGH* Percy Jackson *COUGH*
I’m excited to see where the trio’s story goes
Me too!
I was just rereading AL and FOARD and was wondering if Augums lightning is all black or just his armor, shield and his elementus, also are his ring regular lightning or black lightning and is it just random to have regular lightning or black lightning?
By far my favorite series so keep up all the amazing work.
His rings are normal lightning, as is most everything else he uses in his element, with the exception of objects that need a crust/that are hard, such as his shield and elemental armor. At that point the lightning turns blackish, hardening ice-like. For the book covers though the artist used regular lightning as black lightning just look like dirty ice.
Hope that clears things up, and I’m glad you’re enjoying my work. Did you have any favorite scenes? Any favorite characters?
Robins dual and Augum or Bridget are my favorite characters
Interesting! Why Bridget?
Mostly Bridget because her personality is the most similar to mine
I forgot to add this but I like her story ark, how she gets over her fears and always sees the good in people
In that respect she’s really fun to write because she is this goody-goody, and I enjoy challenging her with moments that force her to make decisions that don’t always align with who she is, and that in turn evolves her character. She is a genuine, lovely and caring person who has a lot of potential for complexity.
What is the time cycle for this world day in a year hours in a day days in a week second in a minute that kind of thing
One year is 360 days, 30 days per month, split into three tendays each / six quints (each quint is five days, mostly used in the academy). Standard 24-hour days, but use quarter of an hour increments. Heartbeats are used as seconds (minutes are not used, though I’ll probably implement something along that line eventually). There is a moon, but the world itself is not earth.
Frankly as a gamer, I think that I would better love a Skyrim like game based off of the Arinthian (which I am sure I misspelled) series that is hundreds of years before the events of the books where you play as an up and coming Arcaner during wartime during the age of dragons.
I think a large gaming studio could potentially handle the work, as long as they understand the scope of it (helps to be a fan obviously). In fact I suspect it’ll probably end up being turned into a game eventually by a well-connected reader (same with movies). But we’ll see. And you spelled it right! Arinthian!
So I’m going back and rereading/listening to the Arinthian Line again (stefan rudnicki has the perfect tone of voice for your series). I didnt realize how much you actually foreshadowed between the end of Valor say the last 10 to 15 chapters and the first 10ish Chapters of Clash. Now my question is did you do that on purpose meaning you had the idea for Rise of a fury Dragon while finishing up AL or did you get the idea going back and rereading the AL series? Also I didnt catch any hints of who Lividus’s father is. Could you give me a hint or pm me and tell me
Yes, I’ve always had a vague idea of where I wanted to go with the next series, so there were some dragon hints / foreshadowing / breadcrumbs sprinkled throughout series 1.
And it has not been revealed who Augum’s granfather is (but he does know who his great-grandfather is — Thomas Stone, Mrs. Stone’s Leyan husband.)
Will it ever be revealed or always be a mystery?
Possibly, depending on which story line I want to follow. To early to tell right now :)
I saw a question on the subreddit that I also have been wanting to know the answer to, and I couldn’t find it anywhere else, so I’m asking it here: How did you come up with the Arcane Language? Is it a mishmash of other ;anguages, or something completely different?
The language is based primarily on Latin, but with my own twist. Some of it, depending on its origin within Sithesia (and elsewhere), is also based a little on Spanish, Polish, and even Japanese.
Wow. The language seemed complex, but I had NO idea!
I picked up on the Latin, but I thought that it was also French mixed in.
I love your books. I have a question about setting. You have years for the adventures, but are these supposed to be Earth years, possibly using a different system of numbering years, possibly in the far distant future, or is it some other planet or some other dimension?
They are close to earth years: each year is 360 days, each month 30 days. It’s an earth-like planet. As to the rest, that I shall perhaps reveal in good time :)
Glad you’re enjoying my work!
I enjoy them very much. I teach college English and introduced a class to Arcane during the fall semester. They liked it, and at least one of the students was going to ask for all the books for Christmas!
Wow, I’m deeply honored! Please pass along my very best regards to your students, and thank you, Ronna :)
How do you make the time to write a book I’m trying to write one and just can’t make the time. ( I may also be a little bit lazy)
It’s very difficult to start. I’d recommend working on self-discipline, which is the root skill you need to write consistently every day. Then set goals. Start with writing a mere 500 words a day. Then after a month, inch it up to 1000. Then 1500, then 2000+. But you can go in smaller increments. The key is consistency :)
Good luck!
Ok I’ll try but I’m only 15
Then there’s no rush in learning the skillset. It takes years to develop the skillsets involved in writing, so feel free to take the time you need and don’t rush it.
So I’ve been doing some reading of your books (and rereading, and re-rereading and so forth) and I just want to say that you are a master writer and thank you for your books. I also want to ask about mrs stone and her potential (and I hope definite future) series. When will it start in her life? We hear that she cast her first spell at age 10, what was it? How many, if any, rings does she have when she first starts the academy? How many rings did she have when she inherited the scion? Thanks for using some of your precious time responding to these, you amazing!
Nathan Robinson
“You can’t push a chain…”-Lyle Robinson
Hello again, Nathan!
Anna’s story would start young and progress quickly through her years. But I have some ideas how to accomplish this, probably by calling the series a “chronicle”, meaning it would be open ended and I keep adding to it with time. I think that would be a lot of fun and take the pressure off too.
A skill I’d love to develop is being able to push out two books a year, but it’s a LOT of work, and I already work a lot with the trio.
And thank you so much, that’s very generous of you to say. But I still feel like I have a long way to go prior to earning the “master writer” title ;)
I like that idea
Also how do you say Arinthion
And you do deserve that title
Aww thanks. And Arinthian is pronounced Ah-rinth-yan (that’s the best way I could spell it here hehe)
I just love in Legend when Augum teleported everyone in castle Arinthian away from danger, but in doing so, giving himself arcane fever, even though he had the scion. But it was cured by the love of his friends. Is there some way Augum could use this to his advantage in the future to overdraw but have his friends help him again? Also I have read many books, including Harry Potter, and it is by far the best series I have ever read. Thank you for your hard work!
Hello, Joey!
That was a very special circumstance, but theoretically, yes it is possible, though would have to be a moment that transcends the normal bounds of arcanery. Love is a healer, and one day the trio will hopefully well and truly understand that :)
And thank you so much, that means a lot, especially compared to the juggernaut that is Harry Potter. I get a lot of people saying they think The Arinthian Line is like Harry Potter, and frankly I’m deeply honored.
And thank you for swinging by, Joey, you are always welcome here!
Hey so I have a question about the Strength spell. As we know, the power of said spell is amplified with higher proficiency, but does it also depend on the warlock’s base strength?
Also, is Jez related to Leera in some way? Maybe an unknown aunt?
Third thing. After the Legion War, people gifted the trio stuff for Castle Arinthian. It is obvious they’ll get the castle back. But will they get more stuff? If so, a stone carver, perhaps a powerful earth warlock, making parapets in the design of dragons would be awesome.
Fourth thing. You made the books like 581965078943745123457803420501 times more awesome by adding dragons, especially by having them come from a different plane!
To answer:
Yes, the Strength spell is based on the character’s base strength.
No, Leera is unrelated to Jez, it’s just a coincidence they look similar (I thought it was fun to do that).
Unfortunately I am unable to comment on this one at this time. Sorry!
Thank you, glad you enjoy the dragons. I have some surprises ahead on that front in FoaRD book 4 too ;)
I was wondering if after you finish the fury of a rising dragon series if you are going to start another series with the trio or are you going to end that storyline?
Most likely I am going to start another series with the trio, but they’re a touch older, and will have other challenges. Also, there will be more lightness and relaxation involved and fun plot points rather than the constant harrowing survival plot lines. But we’ll see, nothing is set in stone yet :)
I don’t know if this could be possible within the arcane laws of this universe, but I think it would be awesome if there was an Arcaner spell that allowed one to use portals as weapons. It would allow you to, instead of using a lot of stamina to slowly make one large permanent portal, use smaller amounts of stamina to create smaller temporary portals that could send enemies away from you, send them off a cliff, or even cut appendages off. I’ve seen this in some action movies and books, and it always made for some really creative fights.
Thanks,
Ben
Well that’s certainly an intriguing idea, Ben! Due to the arcane laws, however, it would also be extremely difficult to pull off, perhaps only at the 20th degree or so. But I suppose it could still be done with a creative enough mind :)
Anna did that at Hangman’s rock,She used an extension of Combat Portal, which caused troops to fall through the ground
Very true! I forgot about the combat extension!
Since portal is 17th, what degree is Combat portal as well as the combat portal extension?
Also 17th!
What’s it called? On the note of teleport what’s the object teleport(We saw it in Clash) called and what’s the degree?
Combat Portal extension name will be revealed in due course. And Object Teleport is an extension of Group Teleport ;)
Got it
Makes sense since Object teleport also teleported 5 people
oi guys how cool would it be if we could have simuls with summano arma combined with Slow or Paralyze or Sleep or Disarm or Push or Mute
would be awesome, after the cumulative effects your enemies would be utterly incapacitated
That’s the plan: have more powerful simuls available at higher degrees :) Coming in a future series!
I can imagine that it would a mouthful to say those at all at once. German language has this thing were you can keep on describing something as a single word that is interesting. Seemanmitschwarzbootmitweißhemd… and it can go on and on. I think that is something you could put in as a spell that they would have to figure out. “What is this spell it’s like a scroll but all the letters are connected into one word.” That would be priceless to see how they would figure that one out.
That’s certainly an interesting concept!
Hey!
i have seen so many amazing questions and points of view i hadn’t even considered,, brought to life on this page. i think it was a stroke of genius to implement it. i just thought i’d jump on here quickly and let you know that your books have been changing all our lives for the better, casting an ever-brightening light since i picked up the first book. i also thought i’d remind you that although we have many questions and things that we want added and must sometimes appear impatient, it is due only to the fact that we love these books so much, and appreciate immeasurably the unquantifiable effort and thought you continue put into these books, fleshing them out into awe-inspiring perfection. you even go beyond the writing to supply us lore and spell-lists and with ways to talk to you and ask questions and engage in fierce debate, taking the extra time to please all of us as best you can, for no reward or reason other than that you want to.
i feel that all of us are connected in a deep way by your accomplishments with these books, and i implore you to continue in these endeavours, and dont let us impatient and grumpy readers get to you ;)
im only 15 at this stage, but have read many many books, and can say with honesty that your writing holds a truly special place within me.
thank you so much, we really appreciate you and as always
sempiris vorto honos
Thank you, Jayden, that means a lot to me, and it made my day! I will continue to push hard to give you all my very best work, and hope to continue to inspire you with the trio’s coming adventures :)
i also would like to flip a few of your own questions on you, like what was your favourite light hearted scene and which spell is your favourite
I’ve got a slew of light-hearted scenes that are favorites. The campfire scene deep in the Hall of Rapture in Honor’s Price. The snowball fight between Bridget and the gang in Mercy’s Trial was a recent fav. But then I have old favorites too, like this one from Arcane:
| Augum, Bridget and Leera squeezed through the doors then made a giddy run for it, forgetting the tragedy of the night before and blaming each other for incurring Mrs. Stone’s wrath. It was a moment Augum would remember for the rest of his life—the first quest together in the castle—how marvelous!
There’s usually a bunch in each book that I always look forward to rereading when I’m doing pre-editing prep for my work.
As to my favorite spell, that’s a tough one. Besides the Spirit of the Dragon simul (not just because the trio can fly, but because of its side effects which are fun to write), I’d probably say Centarro because it can lead to some incredibly moments of inspiration (for both me as a writer and Augum as a character). Now in terms of pure casting satisfaction it’s a tie between Telekinesis and Summon Weapon ;)
So I just thought of something silly. Could it be possible to make portal like in the game portal building momentum and coming out of the other at high velocity? I can imagine a person doing this the first time and doing cartwheels coming out in a ragdoll like fashion.
That’s hilarious! Yes, I suppose it is possible, but also difficult as permanent portals are ritual spells that are always cast vertically. You’d have to have a thorough arcaneological understanding of the craft in order to flip the portal horizontally. But yes, theoretically it is possible :)
(Great game, by the way! Finished the first one twice years ago)
I have a question about what happens when someone cuts off the arm with a warlocks degree rings. Do the rings just switch sides? If not does he just lose them all? I had this thought after reading Valor and the professor reminded me about this question which I’ve had for a while.
I have to avoid spoilers as the answer is interesting. But I will say that this very question is directly answered in Mercy’s Trial (Fury of a Rising Dragon, book 3).
which chapter is it? I must not remember that part.
It’s the chapter title “Surprises”, featuring Akeya “The Blackest Howl” Kessenga, who says the following:
“You may wonder how a right-handed woman transferred her rings to her left arm.” She looked back at them with a sharp-toothed smile. “Nothing short of hard work is the answer.”
:)
thank you
Ok so I have a few questions
1. Is the immunity to lightning hereditary?
2. If so does that mean that the original arcaners were immune to something that relates to there element like water would be able to breathe underwater?
3. This is more personal, what gave you the idea of the story? and how did it come to you?
4. (Back to the books.) Will you write a book on Leland?
5. Will the trio spend more time on Endraga Ra?
6. If so will they be studying dragons and get more powerful?
7. Will the trio be fighting in the final battle or commanding?
sorry, there are so many questions.
1. Yes and no. Two things are required: both parents must be lightning warlocks, and the offspring has to be lucky / blessed by “The Fates / the Unnameables”.
2. As above only.
3. The idea of the story came simply as such: it was the adventure I wanted to go on. Nothing more. Arcane was built scene by scene with no goal in mind other than adventure (all that came later). That said, my roots in RPG / fantasy reading laid a strong foundation.
4. Possibly, if there’s time. Each book takes about a year of my life, so nothing is certain.
5. That I cannot say at this time. Maybe :)
6. This I cannot answer at this time.
7. I cannot reveal this at this time.
Hope that helped!
I love how your last three answers were basically just different ways of saying: “Wait for book four!”
XD
It would make sense for them to do both. They would lead and fight. That’s what they did last time. I doubt that just doing it from a commanders point of view would be very interesting for the reader or at least not as interesting as fighting in the dirt.
What does castle arinthian look like. How many stories is the castle? How deep does the foundation go? Is the court yard inside the castle or on top? How large is the catacombs? Are there matticulations on the parapets. Are the parapets round, square or rectangular? What is the color of the floor in the legendary trainer? Are the gates on the castle reinforced with steel or iron? What caps the tops of the four parapets? What is the broad capacity for food stores and beds? Final question, what is the size of the fountain room? Sorry for all the questions trying to get a layout to recreate the castle. Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.
Speaking of the castle, I have been thinking for quite some time not that it would be cool if it was remodeled for the next series to have dragon fixtures all over the castle, a dragon statue in the square as a memorial, a boarding house or wing to the castle for apprentice Arcaners, and if the castle acted as the primary headquarters for all Arcaners. (I was thinking that after what happened to the last generation that they might decide to have the Arcaners work closely with all of the royal families, but be a sort of inter kingdom law enforcement agency allowing them the freedom to be more neutral on certain topics of politics.)
Hi there! All great questions, and thanks for your patience with my reply (super busy with book 4 FoaRD writing/editing). Some details about the castle are as follows.
The castle is seven stories high:
Main Floor, Knight’s Floor, Nobility Floor, Scholar’s Floor, Prince and Princess Floor, King and Queen Floor, and watch tower.
The foundation is arcane and extremely large (there’s a massive Training cavern down there, among other things like a cellar, a massive crypt, a dungeon, and an armory). Think maybe 10-20 stories underground. Can’t give specifics as to size unfortunately, so you’ll have to wing it. Parapets on exterior are classic castle crenelations. The Trainer has a living earth floor (it’s described in the book Legend as well as in FoaRD series). Castle gate reinforced with iron and arcanery. Lots of room for storage in cellar, and servants sleep and work on main floor. The fountain room is a long rectangle/forest room.
I hope to eventually post some of the maps/drawings I’ve done for the castle.
And Corvus: interesting idea about fixtures! I’ll consider it for next series :)
Will the trio have larger dragon forms as degrees increase or just the same size with more arcane power?
Yes, I am expecting them to grow in dragon size a little bit over time with certain powers, but not too much, and likely not in this series.
Alright, got a few more questions I came up with recently.
1. How do you come up with different characters and their traits, personalities, strengths, weaknesses, etc? Are they based off of people you know? Or do you mainly use your imagination?
2. Back to Mrs. Stone again. After the FOTRD series is over and you turn to her story, how do you think you’ll adjust to writing from her perspective instead of Augum’s, since every book so far has been from his perspective.
3. How difficult was it to come up with the storyline in the first book of the Arinthian Line? Did you spend a lot of time planning?
4. How did you come up with the names of different spells and their effects? Also, how did you come up with the language? Based off of English?
5. Jengo mentioned that in the past, healers were able to cast the First Offensive, but there would be punishments for doing so. Out of curiosity, what would it look like if a healer cast a First Offensive?
Sorry if this is too long. Keep up the good work!
Great questions, Gabriel! here are my answers:
1. I come up with character traits in various ways. Sometimes I have a strong idea for a character and simply run with it. Sometimes I draw one up and fiddle with it prior to inserting them into the story. Sometimes I get inspired by characters in film, books, or certain mannerisms people I know have. But the characters always get fleshed out during the editing phases, sometimes changing completely.
2. I am not sure yet which direction I will go after FoaRD is over. No decisions have been made on that front yet. As to changing over to writing from Anna Stone’s perspective (when I eventually give it a try), there is no doubt it will be challenging. But I have some ideas on what I want to do ;)
3. It was pretty difficult coming up with Arcane’s plotline because it was my first try. That said, I flew by the seat of my pants mostly, meaning I came up with it as I went along, and planned only a few scenes ahead usually. That book went through twelve drafts too, because I was that inexperienced and wanted to ensure it worked. Luckily I have an amazingly supportive wife who encouraged me to tune it.
4. Spell names are always tricky, and what I usually do is play around with different names and variations until I stumble across something that I like. As for language, it’s based very loosely on Latin, though sometimes Japanese, Spanish and French too.
5. A healing First Offensive is a beam of white-hot light ;)
Cheers :D
Alright, thanks for answering these questione of mine. I may come up with more to keep you on your toes ;) well, depends on if I come up with more. Guess that’s another reread. I have a reminder set for early December :)
A beam of light. Should’ve expected that lol.
can you please write bk 4 faster?
Working as fast as I can, but the key is to write in balance, otherwise burnout happens and the work suffers (and thus so do the readers). That said, I am on pace to hit the deadline, which is a December launch.
you can’t rush perfection
So since all the elements in the book are in some way linked to a person and can be the same down lineages. Is it possible that all the elements(expect for necromancy) are possibly hereditary. It seems to be the case with the way many of the characters have the trait and why it is hard to expand into the other elements but not impossible. However, my main question is can an Arcanist child possess more than one element when they begin training such as a mix between fire and earth elements? Also just a side idea couldn’t arcanery be used to technologically advance without using to much machinery? Imagine a train like contraption with a fire and water warlock making steam for the engine and some form of ancient earth spell that instantly makes tracks in front of the train.
The question of heredity is an interesting one, and does play a factor. It’s something I hope to explore further with future books.
Now, can a child express more than one element? Theoretically, yes, but you’d be talking about a superbly gifted child, a prodigy, if you will. One hasn’t come along like that yet … but may in the future ;) The closest prodigy thus far had been Anna Stone, and I hope to discuss her youth in a future series that will explore that talent.
Arcanery is already used in place of technology, yes, and on many fronts. Interestingly, “technology” per se does NOT advance very quickly because people merely shrug their shoulders and hire warlocks to do the work instead. What’s even more interesting is that certain mechanical technologies DID exist thousands of years ago (see the Rivican empire). But much knowledge has been lost due to war, famine, pestilence, and especially superstition etc.
I have several canon questions, so I’m sorry if this seems like a lot. My friend and I have lots of heated discussions on these topics, so I was hoping that you would shine some light on the more elusive answers.
1. How does the Slow spell work? Is it a Mind Spell that you defend against with Mind Armor, is it a physical spell that you have to dodge, or is it some combination of the two?
2. What exactly is the gesture for 1st Offensive? And, follow up question, does the gesture change with each level of Offensive? (i.e. 2nd Offensive, 3rd Offensive, and so on.)
Thanks, Barrick
Two great questions, Barrick!
1. The Slow spell is a mind spell that affects the body.
2. The gesture for The First Offensive does NOT change with higher degree variations of the spell. What changes is the thought process, how much arcane stamina one puts in, etc. As for the gesture itself, one slaps their wrists together with straight arms and the hands open outward.
Hope that clears things up for you two :)
Sorry that I didn’t make this clear, but do you bring your hands together horizontally or vertically? That was the part that was confusing us.
Thanks for the answers on the other things though!
Ah, then that would be horizontally :)
YES, I was right!
Thank you!
I’ve been reading through all of the epic duel scenes, and I’ve noticed that we only really see one duel between Mrs. Stone and another warlock. Is this on purpose? and are you planning on putting in other scenes like this with Mrs. Stone?
Yes, it’s on purpose. One day I hope to write Mrs. Stone’s story when she was younger, which would be full of duels :)
ok, thanks! keep up the good work!
Will Augum’s immunity to lightning play a role in the next book?
Good question! If he comes up against a lightning warlock, then yes it will. Hasn’t happened yet though and I’m 175,000 words in as of yesterday.
Nice progress!! Can’t wait to read it!
Do you think you will ever write a massive battle with ordinaries as well as warlocks. Like a field battle.
Yes :)
I’m looking forward to the strategy.
Love the books and hope that the next one comes out soon!!
I just had a question to asked that had occurred to me. Is it possible that scions were crafted from the hearts of dragons? They have the same amplifying powers so I just thought that it might be possible.
also, you talked about a good necromancer earlier in the comments. is Edwin that guy?
Great question! Alas, I cannot reply without spoiling a bit of the plot of book 4 ;) Sorry!!
Regarding the hearts of dragons:
All I can say is … maybe ;)
all great news, thanks!!
Is it possible that that is what Tyrranecron is trying to do? create more scions to make himself more powerful?
Yes, it is possible. Whether or not that’s the route he’s taking is another matter … ;)
Who is your least favorite character to write.
That changes all the time, and it’s always a character that bores me in that moment (though very rarely is it any of the major characters). If I’m bored by them they annoy me. It also usually means the underpinning idea for the scene is weak, and so I have to step back and rethink the scene from the ground up. I trust my gut with these sorts of things a lot and am easily bored, so a lot of characters get makeovers using this method.
Great question!
I have a question, and your answer doesn’t affect my feelings for your books in any way, but…
SPOILERS!
In Riven, (Which I always though was a cool book title because it means basically the same thing as Sever) why didn’t Augum, Leera, and Bridget use the witch’s favor to kill the Lord of The Legion and all his followers? I can’t think of any limitations in the poem they find that would stop this.
I understand completely if this is just a plot device, and, like I said above, it doesn’t affect my feelings for your books in any way, but is there an in-universe explanation?
There actually *is* an in-universe reply to this. Should the characters have asked for this favor, it would have rebounded back on them. The way “evil” works at that level is it tends to help itself, and so the witch would have found a way to screw the characters over because the witch served the same side as the Lord of the Legion (again, only at that level, so to speak).
Hope that makes sense :)
Great, thanks, now I can let my friend know next time he brings this up. :)
What is in your opinion the best scene in one of your books.
Great question, and very difficult to answer. I have a wide variety of scenes that I very much enjoyed writing, but it’s hard to quantify them as “best” for other people. But as far as that “best” goes, I suppose the scene that shows the moment before Augum enters the arena to fight Robin in the book Clash is up there (I went over that scene more than any other probably to get the nuance just right). Some of the final scenes in Legend are similar like that; lots of tension and nuance and emotion involved.
Personally, I tend enjoy the scenes with witty reparte most, such as when the trio and Jez enter the academy in the FoaRD series, and Jez hooks an arm around Augum and relentlessly teases him, and then Augum spies the girls in their funny-colored dresses and thinks of them as fruits. Silly stuff like that is probably my favorite type of scene to write. As such, Leera and Jez are probably my top favs of secondary characters to write about because they have similar mischievous streaks. Bridget’s fun and challenging on another level because she’s more in touch with her inner feelings, and struggles with a deeper conception of morality, whereas the others can get by on less, so to speak.
Oh, a really fun scene to write in FoaRD was when Mrs. Stone sat down and got all excited to pass on what she’d learned. Went over that scene quite a few times too to get her nuance just right.
Hmm, lots of others, but I have to get back to writing. FoaRD book 4 is coming along nicely, despite everything that’s happening in the world (wife and I have been in self-isolation for almost two weeks now).
Hope everyone out there is coping.
Is the next book the last book in fury of a rising dragon
Almost certainly. But the trio’s story will not end there :)
I think I know the title (You said last book in FoRD would be called it in previous comment. Just a theory.)
is there some sort of store for Arinthian Line merchandise
Not yet, but my wife and I have been mulling this for a little while. Is there any sort of merchandise you would like to see?
Posters would be awesome
I would think wall mounted ornamental Arcaner shields would be cool.
That would be freaking AMAZING
Or maybe a poster of Augum Bridget and Leera
Standing next to each other with castle Arinthian in the background
Poster is an interesting concept. I’d have to hire an illustrator though to draw them out.
Or you could have the cover of one of the books as the poster
One of the books as a poster is certainly an idea too!
Were there other orders like the arcaners such as with the knights Templar and the Knights of St Lazarus
Yes!! Quite a few different types, actually. I hope to get around to delving into them in future books :)
Hmmm seeing a spot for archers
what is your favourite thing about being an author.
What a great question!
The top thing by far is I get to experience wild adventures through my characters, full-time, for day job. So whereas others blow through my books in a matter of days, I get to *live* inside those books, day in and day out, in the world I created.
That’s my job … so it’s not really a job to me, it’s a beautiful and thrilling and wild adventure.
That’s my favorite thing about being an author.
hey what are the laws of solia i did not see them on the lore page
The laws of Solia have not been published yet.
In Burden’s Edge, Augum states in an internal monologue that he has taken 4 lives in total through his entire life. But by my count, he’s killed at least 7-8 people by that point.
1. Corrigus (Stabbed through temple in Riven)
2. The Bandit Sal (Killed with a 1st Offensive in Valor)
3. Robin Scarson (Killed through Karmic Revenge in Clash)
4. Insect Necromancer (Killed in Legend)
5. Random necromancer in Blackhaven (Head blown off in Legend, although this one was a group kill, so it may not count)
6. Erica Scarson (Killed by a reflected 1st offensive in Clash, then resurrected as a Revenant and decapitated by Augum in Legend)
7. Random necromancer on the drawbridge of the Black Castle (Sliced in half in Legend)
8. The Lord of the Legion (We all know this one)
Were these all typos, or am I missing something? I need answers!
SPOILERS!!!!! Forgot to mention that, so please don’t read if you haven’t read the whole Arinthian Line series.
No, you’re quite right! But there’s a bit of nuance missing: Augum considered certain deaths more personal. For example, all three of them killed the Lord of the Legion together. Same with the group kill necromancer. As for Robin Scarson, Augum wasn’t the one who did the killing, but Robin’s own karma ghosts. As for the insect necromancer, that thing was more undead than alive, lol. So, yeah, good list, but there’s a bit more to it :)
OK, that makes sense, I was just confused when he said that he’s only taken 4 lives. Thanks for the clarification.
Wouldn’t Erika count twice as he killed her twice
Hehe, I suppose? Interesting perspective.
But she was a revenant (that’s it, right?) the second time. It was different from killing Erika in the arena.
What are the names of the positions of like the inner council of the Arcaners like the judge and sword training master
My computer keeps replicating each comment
That too will be revealed in due course :)
What are the positions of Arcaners such as the person who trains the squires in the sword because it would make sense for someone to teach classes
That sort of information will be revealed in the coming books as Augum slowly rebuilds the order :)
Now I’m curious will Augum ever meet any of the Titans in the future.
What do you mean by Titans? Like, the ones from Greek Mythology?
Augum mothers family.
Oh wait, yeah that should be obvious. (That would be really cool though)
If my plan works out, then yes, but not in this series :)
new series?
Yes :)
Wait what new series 😲!?
In a future series as yet unwritten! =P
Hi, I was the one who made that book cover for Arcane, which was posted in the reader mail section somewhere around Dec 20th. I love this series and can’t wait for the next book! I do have a few questions about the series and lore.
1. Mrs. Stone.
Have you thought about making a book about Mrs. Stone’s adventures/duels? I am so curious about some of the stories mentioned in the series and am wondering if you’ve considered writing about them.
2. Spells
When Augum, Leera and Bridget’s adventure comes to an end (please don’t make it end soon c:), will you make a full list of all four spells per degree, from the 1st to the 20th? I know there’s a list that refers to the trio’s spell knowledge, but it would be nice to have a full spell list.
3. Bowlander
Oh boy… there is one big question I’ve had ever since reading Legend: What is the fate of Buttbe- err, Bowlander? It said that he had, supposedly, fled to Canterra. And now Solia is under attack from that very same kingdom. Makes me wonder if you have plans for him… :)
Anyways, those are all the questions I have. Sorry for it being so long. Again, can’t wait for the next book!!!
Hello, and thank you for your earlier cover contribution!
Here are my responses:
1. Yes, I have. Quite a lot, actually. I do have plans on writing about her youth one day, but not sure when as I am having a total blast with the trio right now.
2. Yes, a full spell list will be made public in due course, but only after the spells have been written about in a book in the first place.
3. That’s a great question! Alas, I cannot answer it at this time because I don’t know (yet) :)
Sorry for such a late response. This is going to be hard to wait in anticipation :) but then again, “Patience is a virtue that transcends”.
Ah, an old favorite quote of mine (thanks, Mrs. Stone, hehe) ;)
Have you considered a group of masters of arcane archery
Not per se, but I have considered archery competitions for warlocks ;)
It could be like an organization called like the brotherhood of the arcane arrow
they could be like a brotherhood
Ignore last comment it changed the fill out details and I couldn’t see the post
Or sisterhood? Anyway, it’s a lovely idea ;)
what limb do you think agum will lose fighting Orion
Hehe, what makes you so sure Augum is going to lose an entire limb fighting Orion?
I don’t know about you, but I think maybe it should Leera or Bridget who looses a body part/suffers an injury like Augum’s elbow. ;)
What did I miss when I was reading about Augum losing a limb?
You guys are vicious! Yikes =P
And Matt, you didn’t miss anything, the other person was just theorizing.
i bet he is going to trick us he wont survive fighting orion and needs to fight his way out of hell
what are the logistics of Turing into a dragon because when I was reading I heard they said to summon the dragon inside of you so I thought that all of the pepole with arcanery have a dragon that is part of there soul and bonding with a dragon lets you interact with that part of your arcanery and become a dragon and like you Lose stams to appease the dragon because you are making a trade with it
Those are all great questions. Unfortunately I don’t have a direct answer at this time, but I will be exploring some of these issues in book 4 of FoaRD.
is it possible to be skilled enough to kill a dragon with no magic
Perhaps with some very creative thinking, such as crafting a large trap that buries it in magma, or something like that ;)
Hmmmm
hey if arcaners were owned by women what if men are only allowed to use it during war times and after the war agmum looses his ability to turn into a dragon and need to work really hard to catch up to Bridget and Leera would be some good drama
I don’t know, that would cheapen all the work Augum went through in order to get his ability. Plus, the whole idea of gender equality doesn’t mean women are better that men, but that they’re equal. I believe that Isabel the First Arcaner would have wanted men and women to be on the same ground in her craft.
Love the enthusiasm, you guys :)
Augum will have some challenges ahead in his life regardless of how things turn out in this series. I look forward to exploring some of them in the years ahead :)
what do you think the trio would need to do if an unnamable tried to take over the 7 kingdoms
Oh, that’s hard to say, but I don’t see them simply doing nothing about it ;)
Well in a way an unnameable already made a bid for control. Magua.
Very true, hence why Mrs. Stone had her own fight on her hands (and that would make a fun one-off book showing her side of the story)
Would you consider making one/all of your series into a movie? I would love to see the trio come to life, and I don’t think I would be the only one.
Thanks,
Ben
This is a commonly asked question, interestingly. Seems a lot of people feel similarly. I would absolutely love to see their story turned into a movie franchise. Unfortunately, I have no contacts in that industry and wouldn’t know where to begin. But in the meantime, I’m happy and grateful to simply be able to write full-time as is.
Hey sever I do have contacts in movie industry and on a tv level. I know some producers and friends that have appeared on Chicago Fire PD And Med. Is there someone I can point in your direction?
Hiyas Mustang! I don’t know what sort of person would be required, but I’d love to start a conversation with someone who can at least point me in the right direction. Maybe just tell them I have readers that are constantly asking for a movie franchise? See if they know someone who can get the ball rolling?
Thank you, Mustang (and feel free to email me via the Contact page of this website)
I would love to see this series as a tv series more than movies that way you could do it justice. Maybe an amazon video series
Agreed, Brian! Netflix/HBO/Amazon/Disney Prime would be a good fit.
I think if was a movie that would tried to condense the books plot so they could do it in a 2 hour movie theres a few books that went to movie that bombed because the condense the book into a set window of time like Eragon that first book was great the movie not so much it. I think with a series it would do it justice as long as you got a say
My work is more geared toward being turned into a franchise series similar to Game of Thrones (multiple episodes).
I have a really weird question. What accent do your characters have?
Canadian, but not the hillbilly kind, just plain city english Canadian =P
Thanks
Wow, I always assumed they were English and had such accents.
Honestly UK English works just as well!
Now that your first books have such a positive response, what other genres might you write about?
Can you please update the spell list for all of the new spells, because all of the new spells, in my opinion, are the best part of the books.
I put it on my to-do list!
I’ve been reading a prequel to a book I read and it explains how a lot of characters know each other. I think it would be cool to do that should you ever do a prequel. Mrs Stone knowing Sir Westwood because of Narsus or something would be very cool and interesting
Interesting idea with lots of possibilities! I’ve taken note of it :)
Hey Sever, I’ve just finished reading Mercy’s Trial and now I just want one thing… to make a dungeons and dragons class based on it. The only problem is the complete spell list isn’t posted on the spells page. I was hoping you could sometime make a completed version so I could make an arcanist/arcaner class. Of course it’s no rush as I know you must be busy, thanks!
Hiyas Justin! The spell list usually gets updated only after the spells themselves have been published in a book, and then only once the book has been out a while. Hang in there, keep fighting the good fight in DnD, and glad you’re enjoying my work :)
So I have read burdens edge, and I’m partway through Valor, hoping to find Clash and Legend on audio to finish that series. But my question is about Leera’s elemental spells, with her element being water, what does her first elemental spell do?…
Her first elemental spell is actually Shine! Check out the Spells page for more detail:
https://severbronny.com/spell-list/
Oh and Clash is already out on audio, and Legend is coming out at the end of March :)
I guess I meant to ask what is her extension of Shine with water?
Thank you I hope to listen to them soon!
Ah, it’s a very basic one: it simply lights up a small area of water. I believe she even complained about it in Riven, yet it came in useful in Valor :)
When will the next book come out I’m in total anticipation for the fourth book of fury of a rising dragon?
Book 4 of FoaRD is on schedule to launch in early December 2020.
Will u ever write about the trio having kids
Yes, Brett, I have some ideas on that front I want to explore. Should be interesting to see what happens.
Okay, really inane question that’s been bugging me the whole series: What color are Leera’s eyes? You only ever describe them as “dark” and occasionally “voluminous”. I assume brown, but other eye colors can be dark as well, hence the question.
Great question! Since they’re black, they would technically be a very dark brown.
I noticed that in the Arinthian Line, the first book, Arcane, started with Augum cleaning Sir Westwood’s horse. And then the last book of the series, Legend, ends with Augum cleaning another horse, Toby. I have to ask, did you do this on purpose?
Good spotting! I did indeed, and he had named his horse after the man too–Tobias Westwood.
Just got done rereading both series. Can’t wait for the next book! I’m wondering have you thought about doing some kind of series on Mrs. Stone at all? I feel like you could do 3 to 6 books on her alone. Rise of an Arcane Artist or something close to that.
Yes, I absolutely have, and it’s something I hope to accomplish in this life before I shuffle off this mortal coil :)
That would be a great series. There’s so many things you could do with that. Do you have an estimation when you’ll be releasing the next book
Yes, December 2020. I’m 60,000 words into it and will continue with it after replying to today’s batch of mail :)
I have a friend who bought the Arinthian Line last year at the same time as me, and we love them. I met him for dinner last night, and we literally spent the entire time just fangirling and discussing the books. His favorite scene is the Arena battle between Augum and Robin, and mine is the scene where Augum defeats his father. (I love the creativity of the battle.) Anyway, we though of a way to end the whole series as a whole. I really liked it, so I though I’d share it.
The last book ends with Augum and Leera… dying. Wait, just hear me out. I don’t know how they die, I would prefer peacefully in each other’s arms, at a nice, ripe age, but it could be in combat. In the next scene we see Augum, Leera, and (maybe) Bridget standing stoically together in the swirling sands of Ley. They are all young and in their prime. A figure in shadow stands behind the Trio. There is a flash of light, and two-four young warlocks tumble into the sand. Cries of “Grandpa!” and “Grandma!” are heard, and the young warlocks reunite with their ancestors. Augum says, “Come, there’s someone I want you to meet…” The shadow steps forward and her eyes twinkle as her robe flashes with lightning. THE END
It’s a bit dramatic, but I though it would close everything up, and if not, make for some good fan fiction.
Thanks for writing,
-Ben
That’s really beautiful, Ben.
I’m not sure how I will end the trio’s story, as I still have a lot to tell about them, including fun adventures in times of peace (tournaments, weddings, exploration, mysteries, etc).
Thank you so much for reading and participating! Please give your friend my best regards, and I hope you two will consider taking a moment to leave an honest review on Amazon. Means a lot to us authors :)
Mr. Sever Bronny,
I am in the process of writing a novel myself, one of a trilogy called Roar. It’s a story about genetically re-created dinosaurs roaming the top half of America and a fourteen-year-old boy’s fight for survival. Anyway, I’m in a bit of an odd place, and I’m not sure whether or not I could/should continue. Whatever I choose to do, I would love it if I could share my rough draft with you for criticism, if you’re not too busy. As I’m sure you’re aware, authors can always improve their manuscripts, so hard, solid critique is welcome. Let me know if you’re available, and do not ever stop writing!
Thank you,
-Ben
Congratulations on starting a book! That is quite the endeavor, and sounds like an interesting concept. Unfortunately I do not look at manuscripts for three reasons:
1) There is no time (I have a lot on my plate these days).
2) I get a lot of requests to look at manuscripts, and if I accepted one, I would have to accept them all, and then I would never get any writing done as checking a manuscript takes a lot of mental energy which I desperately need for my writing.
3) I don’t feel comfortable opining on another author’s work, and like to refer them instead to critique forums (you can do a Google search for such forums, there’s a quite few out there).
My apologies, and good luck with the book :)
Are you considering in the long term to have stuff about Augum and Leeras children
There are a lot of variables at play here. I’ll just say that I’ve considered quite a few plot points. I don’t even want to even hint at what happens, so I’ll leave it there. Great question though!
Why doesn’t Haylee use a healing fountain for her leg?
Not all healing fountains can mend broken bones, but the ones that can can only mend fresh breaks.
Ive read all your books but forgot all of them and im keen to read mercys trial but im pretty clueless about everything
A lot of people reread the saga prior to diving into the latest book :)
Yeah, very true, reread valor three times, and the rest once,
There needs to be a subreddit about the series, imagine the wonderful things people would post, fan art for example. I hope we have one and if not make one
That’s a great point! I’ve already created a subreddit, actually:
https://www.reddit.com/r/severbronny/
I just haven’t promoted it in any way, so no one knows it exists. Remind me again in 2020 to promote it and we turn it into a community. In the meantime, anybody who reads this is welcome to stop by and start posting.
joined just this second
What degree is the earthquake in honors price?
That’s a 15th degree elemental spell called “Summon Midling Event”.
So lightning is a storm?
There are variations of that idea, but essentially yes.
I have been thinking about this quite a bit, and I honestly hop that Augum does not become king. I think that doing so would only create more problems for everyone. Augum has a certain weight to him that I think would cause just about any throne he were to sit upon to crumble. He is just too powerful and driven of a person and in many was too controversial to be able to safely hold onto a crown.
Ah, but that is precisely why it would be so dramatic! I cannot commit either way at this time, as I’m still in deep thought over it myself. Luckily, I don’t have to make any decisions any time soon, as I have plenty of ideas that need exploring first :)
It would be dramatic in a sense, but perhaps too predictable. I think that it would be interesting for one of their friends to take up the throne instead, have them take some of the spotlight for a change and be front and center with Augum and the others behind them.
I’ve thought about that too, Corvus, and have some idea on the matter. For now, however, Augum has other concerns, namely how to boot out the Canterrans ;)
I think with Augum being only a teen its expected that he would have a different air to him. But as he matures I feel things would change. He’s already shown to be quite capable of leading, willing to take responsibility for mistakes, and willing to make the right decision even if it’s the unpopular decision.
Does the healing element have a first offensive, as in the books it says that the healing elements elemental spells are like diagnose instead of slam?
Yes, but the healing element is a little tricky because healing warlocks are forbidden to use spells like The First Offensive, which they learn for the end-of-term test in that degree. And yes, some spells are switched out. I’ll eventually put a full chart up of the various elements and spells.
ok thanks
I am curious as why none of the simuls learned were ever specifically mention for anyone but Jengo. I understood the reason you limited them to two due to the lower degree. I am just hoping for more battle action in the next book from the other arcaners.
If an opportunity had come up I would have described Haylee’s simul, but one hadn’t occurred organically. She DOES know one simul that is different, and I look forward to showcasing it in due time. However, because she is lower degree, she only knows two simuls in the first place, and one of them the trio already casts.
Laudine is 8th so did she do the 3 simuls of the trio?
***SPOILER (read Honor’s Price first)***
Alas, Laudine does not survive the perilous Arcaner trial.
EDIT: Oops, I confused one of my own characters! You guys are right; it’s Caireen who does not survive the Arcaner trial. Laudine is very much alive.
Fixed!
Laudine Cooper is 8th degree fire? She helped plan the dance.
I think you may have confused Laudine with Caireen? Check Mercys Trial Kindle version location 114
Ignore my double post below please
I thought it was Caireen Lavo that perished in the trainer.
Yes, Laudine Cooper, the actor and raging poet is indeed 8th degree Fire, and she tried to help in whatever extracurricular activities she can, especially when they involve thetre or drama or dances or anything of the sort.
Will you consider having a prequel about Mrs. Stone
Absolutely. It’s the number 1 most requested story, and it’s one I am seriously considering. The question I would pose to everyone is: would you rather that than another story about the trio? I ask because I would not be able to write both, and the trio would have to wait a few years.
cool
I would have more stories of the trio, I just wanted to know what to look forward to in the future
I am invested in the trio. When they have finished a good life of old age a prequel would be nice.
the trio is a great group of believable characters
I love your books but am confused as to how Haylees knee can’t be healed? is it something to do with it being left too long? one the books
love the books
Haylee’s knee can’t be healed because too much time passed since the original break. There are limits to arcane complexity. However, perhaps if a genius 20th degree healer looked at it again, maybe she’d get lucky . . .
And glad you’re enjoying my work, Matt. I hope you’ll consider leaving honest reviews for the books after you finish them :)
already have on some, Five star review on my kindle for Clash
Thanks for taking the time :)
I’ve finished reviewing the books on my kindle five star for them all, honestly the best books ever, getting mercy trial thursday
Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble, Matt. means a lot to us authors :)
It was no trouble rereading all the books tonight, going to be so tired in the morning but it is 100% worth it
Well done! Quite the marathon ;)
I find Riven the hardest to read as it is before my favorite and after my second favorite. It is very much between a rock and a hard place
Fair enough!
I’ve been reccomending Arcane to a lot of people now, but what is its selling point? my friends got a lot of books he wants to read and I need to make sure its near the top of his list.
Hmm. Here’s the byline I use for advertising the book, which might help, Matt:
With help from a legendary mentor, Augum and friends Bridget and Leera learn magic and set out to save their kingdom from the tyrannical Lord of the Legion. An epic fantasy adventure with over 800 five-star Goodreads ratings. (You can also say it’s often compared as a cross between Harry Potter, Eragon, and The Hobbit).
Will this be the last series about the trio.
No :)
Sever, I have thoroughly enjoyed your work and, like others, am awaiting the next book. You mention your desire to age the trio, it would be nice to show the increasing maturity and wisdom through their thought processes that age is supposed to give.
Also, it would be interesting to show why the evil character is doing what they are doing. I am thinking maybe wanting to achieve a good goal (in their mind) by using any tactic needed, including evil and hurtful tactics. This of course would be for the “Higher” good.
Just an idea.
Yes, I hope to in time age the trio and let people enjoy their stories as they grow up. As to the “Higher” good, that is indeed addressed in Mercy’s Trial. You’ll see what I mean :)
You know what would be cool. Make a new character but he is a necromancer but he isn’t corrupt like all the others and he doesn’t use his necromantic powers for evil. He should be like Auguam’s and Leeras age. That would be cool. But like everybody doesn’t trust him but they learn too.
Yeah I’ve toyed with the idea of a “good” necromancer character for a while, and I haven’t fully given up on it yet. I’m just so busy with the trio’s story that few other major plot lines get a chance. That may change in the future though :)
When does the second round of the tournament end.
Also will Augem have to live in school for the third book and does it have dorms?
Hello Ahron!
If you’re referring to the book contest, I am not sure when the second round ends. As to Augum and the third book, I cannot comment on that at this time as I don’t want to spoil it for the readers, but rest assured that there will be adventure :)
Do you think you will finish this series with the fourth book? Do you see it taking five to wrap it up the way you want it?
Hard to say at this point since I just started the fourth book (third is in the editing stage as we speak). Currently leaning toward finishing it at the fourth, but that may change.
Take all the time to do it right. It is an agonizing but worthwhile wait. I am just glad your quicker than Patrick Rothfuss. He is a talent though, and I look forward to the final Kingkiller Chronicles book. I just hope in my lifetime.
Thank you, I’m honored to be compared to a titan like Rothfuss. And yeah, I look forward to his third as well.
Hi Sever, I’ve started reading your books about a year ago and I’ve re-read them about 2.7 billion times. I was just wondering which book Augum’s birthday was??😂😂
It’s in the very first book–Augum shares his birthday with Atrius Arinthian, and Augum was born on the 2nd day of the 2nd month. Glad you’re enjoying my work :)
did you name cron after the author for wired for story lisa cron
No, I didn’t. The spell was named after a Latin word variant for time, though I can’t recall which one at the moment because it was a while ago.
for the spells object invisible, minor illusion, shrink, frenzy, and craft trap have you just not thought of any phrasings for them
I have, I just haven’t published those spells. When they get published, I fill in their spell incantations.
It is a minor thing, but I did see you called the disarm spell first degree when Augum pulls the knife from the neck of Jez held by the butcher. I believe it should have been second degree. I know it does not effect the story just letting you know.
Oops, did I? Good catch! I’ll be sure to fix that for the next time the book needs an update.
Yes, I’ve seen that a few times too in honours price
I was just curious to know what are the regular healing spells that Jengo know up to his degree. What weapon does Hailey summon for her ice element? I don’t think you have ever mentioned her using it.
Jengo’s healing spells will actually be mentioned in the upcoming book, so I’ll hold off on discussing them for now. As for Haylee’s offensive, it takes the form of a bow and arrow–she’s an archer very much like Bridget!
As in the elements
Dear Mr. Bronny,
How is exploding more dangerous than flooding or earthquakes?
Benny
Hello, Benny.
Well it’s relative to the spell. There are higher tier spells that are far more catastrophic and dangerous than a mere explosive spell like The First Offensive. As the series’ progress, you will be seeing more examples of these massively destructive spells. I’ve been saving them for special occasions :)
What does Jengo’s Anniholo look like and what is so dangerous about the lightning element.
Jengo’s First Offensive has not been made public yet for a good reason, which will be discussed in book 3 of the Fury of a Rising Dragon series.
As for lightning, it is dangerous because it has a tendency to “surge”, which can mean exploding from the inside out.
And I got your email letter and will respond as soon as I am able :)
This may just be for me, but in the lore section Augum’s school schedule is messed up. Also my high school library kit for the whole Arinthian Line series.
Sorry to hear that, Jack. Works fine on my end. But I’ll see if there’s some way to reframe the contents, as I’m not exactly happy with how the presentation turned out.
I told my school librarian and town librarian that they should get the Arinthian Line series and the Fury of a Rising Dragon series for kids to read and they both said that they will get both series.
Thank you! I’m honored :)
How did you decide what historical references you put in?
I mean I am only interested in why did you choose Attyla the Mighty as a charatcer in the books?
I am hungarian and Attyla is one of the biggest historical figure in our history and when I saw his name in the book I was really surprised.
The Attyla the Mighty in my work is a fictional character who bears no resemblance to a real historical character, nor was he based off of anyone historical. It was just a name I came up with that I thought sounded awesome.
Wow!
Then it’s just a coincidence. Welp I really thought you picked him for some reason and was happy to see someone from my history but even after this whenever I read his name in your books I will still think of him because it fits perfectly.
I mean the historical Attyla was a true leader.
Hehe, fair enough, Kristof :)
Thanks to reading your books, I have been playing Skyrim recently. Out of that, I have noticed one issue that the Arcaners may encounter at some point, if not already in the third book. Transportation I could imagine being difficult. So I was thinking, what if the Arcaners of old came up with a spell called Stead of the Dragon that creates an elemental construct in the shape of a horse that is also in full armor with the armor having the Arcaner crest corresponding the the caster’s shield on the front and sides of the horse. Then they would never need to worry about caring for and hunting down their horses in a rush. Perhaps they could even hook the constructs up to a cart or carriage at some point.
that sounds cool
That does fun indeed! Unfortunately book 3 is already written, so there won’t be room for that. Also, I like the idea of real horses, but I may still implement a variation on this idea, as I think it’s fun :)
Thank you!
What inspired you to write arcane and all of the others? was it just something you saw in life? recently I have been trying to write a book but just can’t seem to get the charecter right. How did you get so good at writing so fast?
A long history of reading fantasy books (including harry Potter), as well as playing good old-fashioned role-playing games (such s Rifts and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons). As well, my time as a boyscout in my teenage years; some of those experiences translated well into the story, especially adventure-wise.
In truth, I studied at home how to become a better writer by reading a ton of craft books. If you’re into these kinds of booksI always recommend the following three to aspiring authors:
Wired for Story by Lisa Cron
Self-editing for Fiction Writers by Renni Browne and Dave King
A Writer’s Guide to Fiction by Elizabeth Lyon
Also any of the craft books by Chris Fox.
I’ve also spent a LOT of time redrafting the work until it’s good. Arcane, for example, went through no less than twelve very thorough redrafts/edits before it was published. I applied what I learned from the books and then worked my butt off to make sure the story was the best story I could write through sheer effort in the editing phases.
Is the Arinthian Line in any way an allegory? Does it have intentional symbolism?
I throw in little tidbits of allegory and “deeper meaning” all over the place for people to find like Easter eggs. Some of these things are political metaphors, others social and economic. Others still are historical references to things that have happened. And still others are guesses as to where we as humanity are going, based on things I have read (sci-fi, science articles, futurism, etc).
I don’t discuss any of these in detail because I like the subjective, interpretive angle–meaning, people coming to their own conclusions, and what things mean to them. Plus, I think it would ruin the fun from my end to deconstruct some of the foundations I built. I’ll leave that to those better acquainted with deconstruction anyway.
I’ve only recently had the epiphany that, when it comes to my craft, my job as a writer is not to espouse any one particular philosophy or view point, but to fairly espouse every philosophy and view point through characters that would wholeheartedly believe those viewpoints. It’s a notion that has set me free, although still a new one which I am wrapping my head around.
what would you consider the theme of Arcane
The theme of Arcane is friendship and, in the traditional coming of age sense, realizing it’s time to grow up and leave the nest. It’s a story about the importance of working together and trusting your friends to be there for you in times of need.
Thank You
when do you think the new book will come out? Also do you know what it will be called?
December
December is correct. As to the title name, that has not been released yet (stay tuned) :)
I met a girl who was reading the Harry Potter series. I told her she should read the Arinthian Line series. She told me that she had already read the series and absolutely loved the series. I told her to tell her friends and anyone else she can think of to read the Arinthian Line series too. She told me that she would.
I am very grateful for that kind of amazing support. Thank you for spreading the word on my work–it means a lot :) :)
You should make a book that describes every battle that Mrs. Stone had like Narsus the Necromancer and Scadius Von Edgeworth.
That’s an interesting idea :)
i noticed that in some parts of the books that as augum develops his telekinesis he can pull himself toward objects but mrs stone never mentions this. does this skill develop over time or did you just forget to mention it in arcane? anyway i loved your series.(:
Hello Didi! As the warlock gets better he prevents himself from getting pulled toward the object. But, there is a way to use this to your advantage later :)
I am curious as to whether or not you will be introducing any new Arcaner spells besides the two for healers?
There is one that will be introduced in book 3, yes, and it’s a monster spell (you’ll see what I mean) :)
Are you referring to dragons or something else?
Don’t want to spoil for you =P
I just applied for your advanced reader team.
Got your email and I replied, Corvus, thank you.
I recently had a rather interesting thought that you may consider using in a future book. What if Katrina wasn’t actually a Von Edgeworth! What if it was found out in the fourth book that the Von Edgeworth line ended centuries before with the last known member being an old unmarried man who died of old age or was secretly murdered. Then, his “daughter” miraculously showed up to claim her inheritance and was believed as she had forged documentation and a familial-like resemblance. Just imagine how Katrina would react if she found out that she was not a Von Edgeworth! Especially, given how unhinged she already is. Then consider how she may react if an actual descendant of Rebecca Von Edgeworth were found without any idea of their heritage and they turned out to be a friend of our heroes or one of them!
I love this idea! What a brilliant plot twist! Even if I don’t end up doing something like this, thank you for sharing :)
I have also told all of my friends about the Arinthian Line series and most of them read them and told me they loved the series and would tell more people they know to read the series. I will also keep telling people about the series.
Thank you so much, Hunter! I’m honored and grateful that you enjoy my work enough to tell other people about it :) :)
Yesterday was my birthday and I went shopping with my mom and bought the whole Arinthian Line series so I could read the series whenever I want to read a book.
Wow, that’s fantastic! I’m honored, and I hope you’ll consider taking a photo of all the books together sometime (with you and your mom in it if you like). I’ll post it to the pictures section of the site.
What got you interested in writing books?
I loved fantasy early on in life, and then got heavily into role-playing games such as Rifts and AD&D and such. But I wanted more than that–I wanted to craft the adventures from the ground up and make them exciting time and again. The only way to do that was to write a book. That way, the adventure could be read and reread multiple times and experienced anew.
Mostly, I just wanted to write something that I would enjoy, as if I were the one going on the adventure. That’s how Arcane was born :)
Are you going to make a book where Augum becomes a master warlock at the 20th degree?
I think the fact that the trio already learned a 20th degree spell means they all are able to reach that level. The real question is will it ever be written that they reach that level officially. It is clear that with time and work that the trio have been shown to be able to cast any spell.
Although it’s still a bit early in the process (have to finish Fury of a Rising Dragon, after all), my plan is to show the trio aging through time; their challenges, their hopes, their dreams. For example, the next series about them *may* showcase a marriage (or two?), a graduation, a tournament, and the running of a certain order. I think it’d be fun to see not only how people would treat them, but how they treat themselves. There will be no shortage of trials to come, especially from within (and not always the “kingdom-ending” type).
I’m very excited.
Oh, and I also want to write at least one book about Mrs. Stone’s youth and one about Jez’s tempestuous young adulthood. But I’m perfectly content allowing the trio to age and blossom and become the adults they and everyone want them to be (with some twists, of course).
It’s still me just didn’t have enough space to finish :)
I really want to see some fan arts about the books (I am terrible at drawing but really like to look at fan arts from books I read)
Ps: I really hate you for killing Cai and Isaac they were my favourite characters besides the trio.
Just kidding but really did you have to? :(
Sorry for my english I am still only learning
Yeah I want to do a “fan creation” contest at some point.
And sorry about Cai and Isaac–I miss them too. And your English is fine by the way!
caireen was my favorite, honestly think she was definitely one of the better characters. was there any reason you killed her?
Both Caireen and Isaac died in the tragic tradition of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet: two lovers unable to fulfill their destinies. Their deaths are meant for us to appreciate the relationships that survive.
well it worked and you wrote it in an amazing way, much like the rest of the book
Thank you so much! This book is striking a chord with people, and I’ve never had the responses I’m getting from it. People LOVE it, it’s quite something to experience as an author :)
I am a voracious reader and I love books but I am very picky about what books I reread. I’ve reread these so many times. I think it would be cool to have sir westwood be a character should you ever make a prequel
Sir Westwood would be fun too! Perhaps a mini story of him struggling as an Ordinary knight against the might of warlocks and their arcanery.
did sir westwood have any inspiration
Sir Westwood was based on the archetypal knight character. A traditional, stern, stuffy man with a sold sense of decency.
what about Mrs Stone? was she inspired by something?
Mrs. Stone was inspired by a slew of characters, beginning with a powerful portrayal of an elderly spinster named Marilla Cuthbert, played by Colleen Dewhurst (born 1924–died 1991) in the epic 1985 made-for-TV movie franchise Anne of Green Gables (one of my favorite short sagas of all time). She was also inspired by the actor Judi Dench, who I wrote the part for (should it ever go to film, she’d be my number 1 pick for the part). Lastly, she was inspired by the idea of the wise and stern grandmother we all wish we had in our lives; the matriarch that looks after the entire family.
Hiya!
Just thought I should write something here because I am already reading Clash and I only started the series a week ago.
Ok, maybe it’s the third time I am reading Clash but it’s the same.
I just simply love your books even now that I am reading it for the third time it’s still amazing.
I have a few favourite scenes like tha Battle at Hangman’s rock, the antioc library and everything about castle Arinthian.
I wish you would write more about stuff like what the castle can or could do or what the other training sites are like in the library training ground (in Antioc).
I love all the romanc between the characters I thinks it’s the perfect amount.
Thank you so much! And yeah, I plan on getting back to the castle eventually (and very much look forward to it too).
Arcane abilities in the elements are seen as a tool to be used as good or evil in the books up to this point with the exception that necromancy seems to be seen as more clear cut as evil. The fact that one of the dragons mentioned is listed as necromancy does that mean that you are exploring a positive aspect of the art of necromancy? Do you plan to introduce an arcanist that can wield the power of necromancy for good? How would that differ from the way those have used it for evil?
That’s a great question. At this time, all the uses of necromancy are evil, but I could foresee it being used in a positive light in certain medical instances. And although I don’t have a plan to introduce a good guy necromancer, your question may change that in due time :)
I absolutely loved all of the books. The Arinthian Line series is my new favorite series. You did an amazing job Sever Bronny.
Thank you very much! So–and I’m curious about this from everyone–do you have any favorite scenes? Any favorite characters? Cheers :D
My favorite part was the battle between Augum’s father and the trio. My favorite character is Augum.
my favorite part was the final tournament duel in Antioc and my favorite character is bridget
Interesting! That arena scene is consistently people’s #1 favorite! So what is it about Bridget that you connect with?
just that i really relate to her
Mines when they meet Caireen, she is the best character
It’s always interesting for me to hear people’s favorite choices. Caireen is a lovely choice, for example, one that is a bit of a surprise considering her rather limited role in the books. It tells me her character was well defined :)
me too
She’s regularly a favorite character when I ask people. Interesting.
Oh, I like Leera. Especially Auguam’s and hers relationship
And besides Augum, Bridget and Leera are by far the common picks for people, with Leera edging out over Bridget a bit.
Jengo uses different elemental spells for healing. How would this effect the way he completes his training for being a Dragoon. What type of simuls would he be able to learn?
It’s funny that you mention that because I went through quite a trial trying to figure the answer out a while back upon starting book 3. Needless to say, it took some time, but when it finally came to me, I was like, “Well, that’s obvious. Why didn’t you think of that before?”
Jengo is going to have support simuls, almost like bless-style spells, that support the group as a whole. He therefore knows three simuls: Mirror of the Dragon (already revealed), Ally of the Dragon, and Stamina of the Dragon.
The stamina simul is self-explanatory (it boosts arcane stamina for the group, allowing more spellcasting), and the Ally of the Dragon boosts something else, which I’ll leave the book to reveal (it’s also something rather obvious) :)
Hi Sever,
Can you also let Jengo bond with a dragon? A healing dragon would be awesome.
Hello Chinmay! Unfortunately, I am unable to reveal to you what transpires on that front as it would be a massive spoiler :)
My favorite scene in all of the books was definitely the duel between Augum and Robin in the Antioc tournament.
That seems to be the standout scene for a lot of people. It was one of my favorites to write (and hardest to get absolutely right!). I must have combed over it almost fifty times before I was totally satisfied with how it felt and read.
to anyone who finds the first comment you can go back to… Hello
Hi found it first!!!!
Hi Atticus here
And I congratulate those of you who tracked it down ;)
